Memorial Day was originally created to honor those who died in the Civil War. Historians at the birthplace of the only Iowan to become President are planning to bring the Civil War era to life today. Timothy Walch is director of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Museum in West Branch. Walch says there’s a band made up of music teachers from all across eastern Iowa who will be playing authentic Civil War music in addition to providing brief lectures between songs about the history of the music. More Iowans served in the Civil War, per capita, than from any other state. After the band concert, the 24th Iowa Infantry of reinactors will be on-stage talking about camp life during the Civil War, in addition to the life of a surgeon, a soldier, artillerymen and others. Two full shows are planned, starting at 1:30 and 3 PM. Admission is free.
