Vice President Al Gore says America is poised to grant anti-discrimination guarantees to gays and lesbians. Gore met last night in Des Moines with a group of about 250 democrats, including many homosexuals.Gore supports a law banning discrimination against homosexuals in the workplace and a national hate crimes law.Gore said every American should be free to exercise their “authenticity” — like being openly gay or lesbian. Gore told homosexuals in the audience he would stand for them and speak for them on the issue.Bill Bradley, Gore’s rival for the democrat’s presidential nomination in 2000, issued a statement of support for several proposals, including health care coverage for gay partners and a ban on on-the-job discrimination against homosexuals. Both Bradley and Gore call for having gays openly serve in the military.
