A study finds the percentage of University of Iowa students who smoke cigarettes nearly doubled during the 90s decade. The study found the numbers jumped from 21-and-a-half percent of students saying they smoked in 1990 to 38-point-8 percent last year. U-of-I health officials are disappointed.Sarah Hansen is a health educator at U-of-I Student Health Services. She says this crop of college students may be from a group that was missed by anti-smoking messages during elementary school and more recently. The survey found 20-percent of the U-of-I student smokers said they only smoked socially or on an occasional basis. Hansen says that makes her job even harder, as students don’t see themselves as smokers. The study was done by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Massachusetts General Hospital.
