Iowa’s top tree expert says the state’s making progress in its re-foresting effort. State Forestor John Walkowiack says the programs offer trees at a discount price, but he says that’s not what makes it work. He says educating people about the importance of trees and making them available to plant is important. He says various programs help plant trees on public and private lands..He says while progress is being made, Iowa still has a ways to go to get back the trees that’ve been lost throught the years. Walkowiack says Iowa had six to seven-and-a-half million acres of forest land at the time of settlement compared to the two to two-and-a-half million we have now.
