The Iowa “Safe Kids” coalition is lobbying for an updated law that’d force all kids in the backseat to wear a seat belt. The coalition’s Kathie Leggett says Iowa’s 15-year-old child restraint law needs to be updated. Current law says kids must ride in a child safety seat until they’re 6. Leggett wants a new law that’d require a booster seat for six, seven and eight year olds. Leggett says seat belts are designed for people who are at least 4-feet 8-inches tall. The “Safe Kids” group also wants the law to force kids between the ages of eight and 16 who’re in the back seat to wear a seatbelt, as current law only requires belt-wearing in the front. Leggett’s group lobbied at the statehouse.
