Trial for Quad Cities man could wrap up tomorrow

Trial continues today for 29-year-old Jonathon Hillman, charged in the death of a homeless woman at a Quad Cities transient camp last May. Julie Walton in the Scott County attorney’s office says jury selection was done Tuesday and yesterday they began presenting evidence in the death of the woman at a transient camp in the bank of the Mississippi. She says they might get the case submitted to the jury late this afternoon, but at least feel confident they’ll get through the evidence and both sides will rest. Walton thinks lawyers will give their closing arguments on Friday, perhaps by the end of the morning, and may be able to put the case in the hands of the jury before the end of the day. Hillman’s charged with first-degree murder. A 17-year-old girl he’d been staying with at the homeless encampment pleaded guilty on Friday to second-degree murder. Prosecutors say the girl’s family in Minnesota had an order commanding him to stay away from her, before the two came to Iowa and landed at the homeless camp where they allegedly killed Paula Sue Heiser during an argument in May 2002.
