A huge explosion and fire erupted in a central Iowa farm field this morning. Neighbors say they heard a loud explosion and then saw a large plume of fire in the field, which is about three miles east of Woodward. No homes are nearby, and there’s been no evacuation although authorities did keep spectators out of the area. Preliminary reports indicate the explosion happened along a Northern Natural Gas pipeline. A clerk at a Casey’s General Store a few miles away says it sounded “like three jets going over.” The billowing fire could be seen as far away as in Perry, which is about 10 miles from the site of the blast.A dispatcher for Dallas County law-enforcement who wanted only to be known as Jeremiah says the first reports came in about mid-morning.The dispatcher says calls started coming in from rural residents all over the area, which is near the Boone and Dallas County line.Nobody was hurt in the explosion, which happened out in the middle of a field where a Northern Natural gas pipeline runs under the ground. He says fire and emergency units were sent from Boone, Bouton, Perry, as well as ambulances and several energy companies. The fire was brought under control and the line capped within less than two hours of the blast.
