It’s a cliché that all teams start off undefeated in the post-season and regular season records don’t matter. The Southern Cal Mustang baseball team believes it’s try after getting their first win of 2004 in the opening round of district play. They defeated East Greene 6-2 last night in a class 1A district game. Coach Mark Williamson coaches the Mustangs. He says these kids were 0-24 coming in but they play their hearts out, they play tough. “Of course early on we left about 11 guys on base in the first three or four innings. I was kinda worried, but I’ll tell you what, and then having freshman Gavin Crandall on the mound, hot night and all, what a great win.” Crandall pitched six innings, striking out nine and allowing two runs on three hits.He says Crandall was in a zone, you know he started off the year and he struggled a little the first couple of weeks, and all of the sudden I just said ‘well, go back to last year, your eighth grade year, just rare back and fire,’ and you could just see the confidence building in him as the game went on. Southern Cal will play Coon Rapids-Bayard Friday in the 1A, District 15 semi-final after the Crusaders defeated Glidden-Ralston 8-4.
