A strong showing in Maui has vaulted the Iowa basketball team into the nation’s top-25. The Hawks are 23rd in the latest A-P college basketball poll after finishing second in the Maui Invitational last week.Iowa coach Steve Alford says they beat two out of three ranked teams and a tough Western Illinois team for what he says are quality wins. Junior guard Jeff Horner’s play in Maui has earned him the honor of Big Ten player of the week. Horner averaged 21-points and just over five-and-a-half assists and was named to the all-tournament team. Alford says there were a lot of scorers in the tournament, but Horner had a phenomenal three days. Alford says as Horner has gained experience he has taken on more of the scoring. He says it took him awhile to understand his role as a shooter, and Alford says Horner needs to get shots and help offensively. The Hawkeyes take a 3-1 record into Tuesdaty night’s game at Drake.
