Iowa veterans remember Pearl Harbor on this day, though what they’re doing often is connected to conflicts far more recent than World War Two. In Bettendorf, VFW Post 9128 commander David Hurt says they just finished a fund drive for the family of Private Nicholas Skinner of davenport, killed in Iraq last month. After the funeral they had a big dinner at the VFW and Skinner’s father donated $1,500 to the post to buy food, toiletries and other personal items for troops overseas. They bought items, sent off 23 boxes just before Thanksgiving to Iraq and Afghanistan and Iraq, and he’s ehard that at least one soldier received his box. Post 928 welcomes veterans of conflicts from a range of many years. He says there are several hundred members, and guesses the average is about 55 though there are several members who’ve served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hurt says though you must be a veteran of a conflict that took place overseas for Veterans of Foreign Wars membership, the organization welcomes similar groups. The VFW post has American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, and AMVETS, the American Veterans groups, using their headquarters to hold their meetings. They will hold a moment of silence for Pearl Harbor remembrance, in honor of the group’s World War Two Veterans
