The former Garnavillo city clerk who admitted to stealing some 80-thousand dollars from the city will have to spend up to 10 years in jail. 52-year-old Linda Casperson pled guilty in February to first-degree theft. Caspersen had asked that her sentenced be suspended because a gambling addiction caused her to steal the money. However, the Mayor of and the prosecutor in the case argued for prison time, saying the theft had undermined confidence in city Garnavillo. Caspersen was ordered to surrender today to begin serving her sentence, and was also ordered to pay a one-thousand dollar fine and restitution.
