Farmers in Nebraska and several southwestern states are seeing their corn plants die, thanks to an error at Iowa-based Pioneer Hi-Bred. Pioneer admits a mistake was made at one of its bagging plants. It seems conventional seed corn was accidentally put in bags that were marked as herbicide resistant, then shipped out. An untold number of farmers planted the corn, then sprayed weedkillers like RoundUp and saw their plants die within days. Pioneer says the error happened with one type of corn at a single bagging facility but won’t say how many farms or acres were effected. The company -does- say the farmers will be compensated.
