The Iowa Department of Human Services has set aside up to $225,000 to help low-income Iowans in seven counties who were hit by flash flooding in late August.
After the floods of 2008, state officials established the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program. Grants are awarded in parts of the state that have been designated by the governor as a disaster area.
This week, the Iowa Executive Council triggered the program for low-income residents of seven counties. Those counties are Allamakee, Clayton, Fayette, Howard, Winneshiek, Bremer and Chickasaw. Grants can be used to replace damaged appliances or contaminated food if an individual or family has no other means of dealing with the expense.
