Federal officials are debating what should be done with the billions of dollars in settlement money from the big tobacco companies. A spokespersonfor the Iowa Chapter of the American Cancer Society says some of the money should come to the states for use in smoking prevention efforts. Threase Harms says many states involved are talking about using the money in different ways. She says the fight against smoking will suffer without the prevention money. Harms says the American Cancer Society is calling on the Iowa congressional delegation to push federal officials to put stipulations on the money that requires some of it be used for prevent and smokingcessation programs. Harms made her comments at a news conference today in Des Moines.
