Farmer’s Union President wants investigation of Pioneer merger

March 16, 1999 By admin

The President of the National Farmers Union headquartered in Ames wants the federal government to examine Monday’s mega-merger between Pioneer Hi-Bred and DuPont. John Whitaker says the Pioneer merger as well as a recent mergerbetween the fourth-largest pork packer and fourth-largest pork producer raise concerns. Whitaker doesn’t believe the mergers are a naturalprogression of the agriculture industry. Whitaker says big mergers are different when you are talking about the nation’s most important resource. Whitaker says the country can’t afford to have the food supply controlled by one or two large companies.
