Senator seeks campaign finance reform

A state senator from Marion is pressing for a year-long, full-scale reviewof Iowa’s campaign finance laws. A judge has tossed out Iowa’s ban oncorporate contributions as well aspublic disclosure requirements for political action committees. A bill toclose those loopholes and force unions to ask members each year whethertheir dues may be used for political purposes was debated yesterday by theSenate State Government Committee. The panel rejected Senator Mary Lundy’sproposal to appoint a campaign reform commission. Lundby will talk about her idea with legislative leaders over the weekend.The Senate committee will re-open debate on the campaign reform bill onMonday.
