Red Cross spread across the country helping twister victims

April 16, 1999 By admin

While Iowa’s seeing snow, a deadly band of twisters cut through the deepsouth last night, killing one person and injuring dozens in Georgia and theCarolinas. A team of Iowa Red Cross workers is already in Louisiana, whichwas hit with tornadoes April 3rd, killing 7 people and destroying more than260 homes. Spokeswoman Bobbie Bishop-Millard says the team is offeringvouchers so victims can buy things like clothes, glasses & medication.Bishop-Millard works out of the Central Iowa chapter in Des Moines, but saysRed Cross volunteers from Cedar Rapids & Ames are also at the base inBossier, Louisiana. She says it’s ironic she was sent to help clean up theLouisiana disaster just five days before a series of tornadoes skippedacross southern and central Iowa.Bishop-Millard says anyone who wants to help the tornado victims in Iowa,Louisiana, Georgia or the Carolinas, should make a monetary donation.Damage from last week’s Iowa tornadoes is estimated at eight-million dollars.Again, the number to call to donate is 800-HELP-NOW.
