April 17, 1999 By admin

House Republican Leader-Elect Christopher Rants maintains Governor Vilsackwants to accept corporate campaign contributions and Rants says that’s whyVilsack threatens to veto a campaign finance reform bill. On Monday,Vilsack said he’d veto the bill because it requires union members to eachyear provide written permission so a portion of their dues may be used forpolitical purposes. Vilsack called on Republican legislators to back downand simply ban corporate contributions. Rants is skeptical. However, Rants conceeds Republicans may indeed back down to resolve theissue and maintain a ban on corporate contributions to politicians.Rants made his comments during taping of the Iowa Public Television program,”Iowa Press.” Vilsack on Monday said he wants Iowa law updated sobusinesses can’t bankroll politicians, but Vilsack said he’ll solicit andaccept corporate contributions if the law change isn’t made.
