Bottle bill hits 21st anniversary

Former Governors Robert Ray and Terry Branstad will lead a rally this afternoon tocelebrate the 21st anniversary of “the bottle bill.” Former State Representative Mary O’Halloran authored the measure whichplaced the five-cent deposits on drink containers. O’Halloran says surveys show nearly 85 percent of Iowans like the “bottlebill.”O’Halloran says when you throw away a pop can, you’re throwing away energyequivalent to half-a-can of gas. O’Halloran, a democrat, was from CedarFalls when she was a legislator. O’Halloran now lives in Kansas Citywhere she is a radio talk-show host.
