Association leader predicts one-third will hang up badge

The acting president of the Iowa Sheriff’s Association predicts one-third ofIowa’s 99 sheriffs will retire rather than run for re-election. Butler County Sheriff Tim Junker says the four sheriffs who’ve alreadyresigned this past year cited stress as a factor. He says that’s what willlikely keep sherriffs from running again in 2000.Junker says trying to find jail space for criminals is creating headachesfor sheriffs.The latest sheriff to quit is Jasper County Sheriff James Verwers ,who says tension migraines are ruining his health.
