Suicide ends standoff

A friend says a 24-year-old man shot himself to death rather than go to jailafter a three-and-a-half hour, early morning stand-off in Council Bluffs. Rosendo Hernandes was wanted for shooting his former girlfriend at an Omahameatpacking plant on Tuesday. Police identify the woman who was wounded byHernandez at the Council Bluffs motel as 40-year-old Dianna Cruz of Omaha, along-time friend of Hernandes. Sergeant Ray Mabbitt says Hernandes wantedher to drive him to Nevada. Cruz was shot in the leg and is in fair condition in the hospital. Thepoliceman who was shot in the shoulder has been released from the hospital. Sergeant Ray Mabbitt says Cruz told officers it was unlikely Hernandes wouldsurrender.Sergeant Mabbitt says alot of shots were fired during the stand-off at theChalet Motor Inn.Mabbitt says Hernandes had a nine-millimeter handgun and lots of ammunition.
