The state high school baseball tournament opens today in Marshalltown andCarroll. The class 2A quarterfinals are in Carroll and the second game thisafternoon matches top ranked Algona Garrigan against fifth ranked CenterPoint-Urbana. Last year as the top ranked team in 2A, Center Point lost itsfirst round district game and coach Randy Chamberlain says that lossmotivated this year’s team.The Pointers take on top ranked Algona Garrigan in the first round butChamberlain says at this point all the teams remaining are solid.Chamberlain feels his team won’t be bothered by state tournament jitters.The class 1A quarterfinals are in Carroll and the nightcap finds ninthranked Lemars Gehlen battling Turkey Valley. LeMars Gehlen coach Marty Kurthsays a trip to state was a pre-season goal.Kurth says players cannot look at the records.Kurth says at this point it is more important what his team does rather thanwhat their opponent may do.
