Baseball tourney gets off to a hot start

The class 2A quarterfinal round of the state baseball tournament is underwayin Marshalltown. Mount Vernon used a wild pitch in the bottom of theseventh to push across the winning run in a 7-6 upset of third rankedCarlisle in the 2A opener. Mistakes were the difference. Mount vernon didnot committ an error in the game while carlisle committed six and it helpedMount Vernon erase an early 3-0 deficit. After opening the season 4-10,Mount Vernon will take a 25-18 record into friday afternoo’s 2A semifinals.Carlisle ends its season at 27-4. It is Mount Vernon’s third trip to thetournament since 1995 and coach Jeff Schwiebert feels that experience was afactor in their victory. Carlisle coach Gary Baker says the six errors byhis team were costly.Also in the class 2a quarterfinal round, winning pitcher Brad Nelson slammeda pair of homers as top ranked Algona Garrigan downed fifth ranked CenterPoint-Urbana 14-8. Center Point trailed early 6-2 and actually came back tograb a 7-6 lead before Garrigan pulled away. Tony Leick (like) tossed athree hiter as 6th ranked Council Bluffs St.Albert downed West Marshall12-2. West Marshall coach Fred Zeller says six errors were costly for histeam. Justin Zellweger’s fly ball to short left-center field dropped in toscore the game’s only two runs in the 6th inning as Ogden blanked Cascade2-0. Zellweger says he was suprised his fly ball fell in.Zellweger says it wasn’t his most impressive double but the end result was.In the class 1A quarterfinals in Carroll, third ranked Lenox had tocome from behind to beat East central of Miles 13-12. The game took threehours and was delayed for 20 minutes after the home plate umpire wasovercome by heat. Lenox rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventhbehind a four-for-four performance and the game winning hit from Seth Evans.Southeast Warren beat Schaller-Crestland 4-1 in the second game of the day.Ninth ranked LeMars Gehlen held off the upset bid of Turkey Valley 2-1.Also in 1A, Sheffield SCMT sidelined 6th ranked Harmony of Farmington 4-2.
