Ethanol gets a boost from the U-S Senate

August 6, 1999 By admin

Iowa farmers could get a much-needed boost after the U-S Senate’s passageof a resolution to boost the use of corn-based ethanol fuel. The statementalso calls for the phase-out of the oil-based fuel additive M-T-B-E. LucyNorton is spokeswoman for the Iowa Corn Growers Association. Some studies find ethanol use may improve air quality, the opposite offossil fuel-based gasolines. Norton says ethanol is much better for theenvironment as it’s a cleaner-burning fuel.Ethanol adds about 30-cents to each bushel of corn produced in Iowa. Nortonsays some estimates show a phase-out of M-T-B-E could greatly increase theneed for corn.Norton is in Washington D-C working to better promote ethanol.
