More doctors staying in rural Iowa

Officials from the University of Iowa College of Medicine say they’ve madegreat progress in getting family physicians to stay in the state. Theassistant dean of the College of Medicine, Roger Tracy, says over 70-percentof the doctors now stay in the state after completing their training.Tracy says the search for doctors in small towns has gone from a sellers toa buyers market.He says larger hospitals have spread out into smaller towns in the 1990’s toform regional areas. Tracy says that’s had an impact on the availability ofdoctors in smaller towns.Forty-six Iowa communities will send representatives to Des Moines todayfor the annual recruitment day for family practice doctors.The recruitment day today will also include physician assistants and nursepractitioners.
