Group seeks to cut farm deahts among kids

August 30, 1999 By admin

An average of ten Iowa children are killed every year while working on farmsand 500 are hurt. A group that aims to make a dent in those numbers is nowoffering packets that are designed to educate kids and adults about thehazards of farm work for children.Kristy Pellett is marketing & communications director for “Farm Safety 4Just Kids.” She says the educational packets recognize hazards associatedwith chemicals and identify dangers kids might be exposed to both on thefarm and off the farm.Pellett says Farm Safety 4 Just Kids now has a dozen Iowa chapters and iscommitted to community-based farm safety programs and projects designed toprevent farm tragedies to children. She says children who live, visit, work, and play on farms are at risk ofbeing injured or killed in farm environments that are unsafe.
