Disabled Iowans to get Better Benefits

October 8, 1999 By admin

State officials want to give disabled Iowans a break when it comes to working and keeping their government medical coverage. Presently, disabled Iowans on Social Security Disability lose their Medicaid coverage if they go back to work and earn more than 700-dollars a month. Department of Human Service program manager Elaine Monaghan (mawn’-uh-han) says many disabled Iowans don’t re-enter the work world because of the paycheck restrictions. State officials are re-writing the rules, which should be in force by March 1st. The Department of Human Services will stage public hearings in eight Iowa cities to discuss the changes. (On October 27th, hearings will be held in Council Bluffs, Des Moines. Ottumwa, Sioux City and Waterloo. On October 28th, a hearing will be held in Davenport and on October 29th, hearings will be held in Cedar Rapids and Mason City.)
