Vandals slow road construction project

November 17, 1999 By admin

Friday’s opening of a northcentral Iowa section of the “Avenue of the Saints” has been delayed. Iowa Department of Transportation spokesman Jim Doeden say big-time vandalism is to blame.Doeden says valuable electrical materials were stolen sometime in late October or early November. The electrical devices included switches and relays for the lights installed at Interstate exit ramps.Doeden says the theft causes a delay of several weeks. The section of the “Avenue of the Saints” from Interstate-35 to Rudd was to have opened Friday. Once completed, the four-lane divided highway should stretch from St. Paul and St. Louis, hence the name “Avenue of the Saints.”
