Law enforcement agencies from Iowa’s tiniest towns to the biggest cities are taking part in what’s called a STEP starting this week — a Special Traffic Enforcement Program. Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau spokeswoman Jan Goldsmith says the program urges people to pay particular attention to buckling their own seat belts, safely securing children in the car — and to never drive after drinking too much holiday cheer.Goldsmith says the record warmth Iowa enjoyed this month is over and we need to prepare for our winter driving techniques. An additional 84 Iowa Highway Patrol troopers will be on duty through the holiday weekend. Three people died on Iowa roads last Thanksgiving weekend — what is traditionally Iowa’s third-deadliest holiday.
