Democrat presidential candidate Bill Bradley is questioning rival Al Gore’s committment to the fight against big tobacco. Bradley yesterday cited a vote Gore took as a Tennessee Senator — a vote which supported tobacco interests. Gore has said his sister’s death from cancer prompted him to re-think his position, and now he supports crack-downs on tobacco makers. Bradley says Gore needs to explain why he once voted for cigarette makers, but doesn’t tow the tobacco line now. Bradley says he has been consistent over time in his beliefs on tobacco.Bradley questions whether Gore is “leveling with people” about his support of anti-tobacco measures.Gore dismisses Bradley’s statements as a negative attack made in desperation. A recent Des Moines Register “Iowa Poll” showed Gore 21 points ahead of Bradley. Bradley and Gore campaigned in Iowa yesterday. Bradley campaigns in Indianola this morning before leaving for New Hampshire. Gore campaigns in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Sioux City today.
