Saltwater helps clear roads

January 17, 2000 By admin

The Iowa Department of Transportation has found success fighting, snow, frost and ice on the roadways using a saltwater mixture. D-O-T spokesman Dennis Burkheimer says they began using the brine mixture a few years ago.He says the saltwater has proven to be more effective than salt alone, as it sticks to the roadway and doesn’t get thrown off.Burkheimer says they’ve found the saltwater even works to prevent frost on bridges and overpasses.Burkheimer says the saltwater solution covers more miles of roadway than a straight load of salt.
