Senators disagree over Greenspan nomination

February 1, 2000 By admin

Iowa’s two U-S Senators may again be facing off. Senator Tom Harkin, a democrat, has called for motions that would delay next week’s vote on the re-appointment of Alan Greenspan as chairman of the Federal Reserve. Senator Chuck Grassley, a republican, says Harkin’s resistence would be futile.Harkin held up the re-nomination of Greenspan for several months during 1996 and is now calling for debate on Greenspan’s performance and monetary policies before he’s given another term. Grassley says the economy has been revitalized with confidence under Greenspan’s watch. An aide to Harkin says the senator has NOT said he’d oppose Greenspan’s re-confirmation, just that he wants to discuss some things first.
