Communities try to link together recreation trails

February 7, 2000 By admin

Several communities in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota are working on a plan for series of canoing, biking and hiking trails along the Big Sioux River. One planner envisions the trail linking Sioux City with Sioux Falls, with the first step just being for canoe trips.Gary Tucker is director of economic development in Plymouth County. He says the trail could run 200 miles long in the water versus 90 miles by land. Tucker says the exact route is still being plotted using existing boat ramps, county parks and state parks.Tucker says it’d be a real boost for the region to have the proposed trail become reality.Tucker says leaders from several communities will meet on the trail proposal next month in Akron, Iowa, to talk about how to make the trail happen.
