Senators discuss decorum

February 14, 2000 By admin

State Senators are discussing how to mind their manners. Taiwan’sAmbassador to the U-S was introduced this morning in the Iowa Senate, andSenator Nancy Boettger of Harlan says not everyone rolled outthe red carpet. Boettger says Americans are not as polite as the rest of the world.Boettger says she and a small group of Senators plan to propose rules ofdecorum when foreign dignitaries visit the legislature.Boettger says part of the problem is that the Senate chamber is the primaryoffice space for Senators. Legislators have a phone and a secretary at their side — making it easy to focus on work rather than distinguished visitorswho enter the ornate statehouse chamber.
