Bill collecting information on abortion is scaled back

March 14, 2000 By admin

A change to a Senate-passed bill scales back the new information on abortions that would be collected by the state if it becomes law. Supporters had hoped to collect more detailed information about women who seek an abortion and doctors who perform abortions. However, Senator Johnie Hammond, a democrat from Ames, successfully offered an amendment to reduce the amount of information collected.Hammond says there’s no need for the state to collect information which might be used to intimidate women and their doctors. The issue will next be debated in the House.
