Davenport and Iowa City capture boy’s titles

March 20, 2000 By admin

Davenport Assumption and Iowa City West claimed titles as the boy’s state tournament wrapped up on Saturday. Assumption won the 3-A title but had to withstand a furious second half rally by West Delaware that saw the Hawks cut a 24-point deficit to one before the Knights prevailed 77-63. Assumption coach Randy Norton says their style of play leads to big runs one way or another. Iowa City West claimed the 4-A crown with a 58-46 win over Johnston. It is the second title in three years for the Trojans but coach Steve Bergman said this was one special considering the Trojans stood just seven-and-five at one point. Bergman said a seldom used zone defense helped stop a Johnston second half rally.
