Iowa Golden Gloves president wins honor

April 25, 2000 By admin

The Iowa “Golden Gloves” President will be inducted in the National Golden Gloves of America Hall of Fame in May. John Connors of Des Moines has been President of the Iowa arm of the amateur boxing organization since 1975. Connors’ love of boxing started at an early age when his dad taught him to box. He had one boxing match and then decided to get involved in the Golden Gloves. Connors prefers the “Golden Gloves” amateur boxing to the professional version of the sport. Connors has watched and helped hundreds of Iowa fighters over the past five decades. Connors, who is 77 years old, offers this advice to young boxers, “listen to your parents, listen to your coach, don’t smoke and don’t take drugs.”The awards ceremony will be held May 9th in Detroit.
