Kids seek history title today

May 1, 2000 By admin

It’s Iowa History Day today for junior high students at the State Historical Building. Roger Munns of the Iowa Historical Society says it’s not a dull event. He says the idea is to change the way history is taught from the old way of memorizing history and dates. Students chose a topic and then work to become an expert in the topic.Munns says the students not only learn their topic, they have to be able to present it well.Kids from all over Iowa take part in the history contest as 2,500 started at the school level, 2,000 advanced to the district level and 60 then advanced to today’s state competition. The winners advance to the national history contest in Virginia. High school students take their turn at the contest next Monday.
