First night baseball game celebrated in Des Moines

The Iowa Cubs cap off two day’s of celebration of the first night baseball game when they host the Oklahoma RedHawks at Sec Taylor Stadium. Tonight marks the 70th anniversary of the first professional night baseball game played between the Des Moines Demons and the Wichita Aviators. I-Cubs general manager Sam Bernabe says while it was one of the most significant baseball events in the city’s history it is also one of the most unknown. The game was played by the old North High School.Bernabe says the introduction of night baseball changed the complexion of the sport as it opened up a new era of holding baseball games at night.Bernabe says Pacific Coast League president Branch Rickey the third will be part of a pre-game ceremony.
