"Love Bug" bites state government

May 8, 2000 By admin

Tech-heads in Iowa and around the globe are dealing with the so-called “I Love You” computer virus.Eric Bakker got to his desk in the Iowa Secretary of State’s office at about seven in the morning. He checked his e-mail, and saw a message from someone who sends him e-mail every day, so he clicked on it. Bakker didn’t check the subject line of the e-mail — which read “I Love You.” If you haven’t heard, the “I Love You” computer virus has spread across Asia, Europe and to this continent. Once an e-mail carrying the virus is opened, it takes over a computer system, sending e-mail messages over-and-over. Bakker’s address book has 650 names, including all 150 Iowa legislators. All those folks received the virus-carrying e-mail. Bakker said he’s embarrassed, but couldn’t do anything about it.
