A company that makes nutritional supplements wants to expand its operation in Des Moines. Kemin Industries President Chris Nelson says the expansion would have a 23-million dollar impact on the state. The expansion includes 15-million dollars in machinery and equipment. The expansion would allow the company to add 76 new jobs with pay averaging more than 16-dollars an hour. Nelson says the company is asking state and local officials to chip in seven-million dollars or the expansion might take place elsewhere. Nelson says the expansion will allow the company to increase the production of some of its popular additives. One is a product called lutein that is added to vitamins to help prevent eye disease.Nelson says another, a potato protein, makes people feel like they’re full and keeps them from eating more.
