Voter turnout expected to be low without statewide race in Tuesday’s primary

June 5, 2000 By admin

Nearly two-million Iowans are registered to vote — but only a fraction will exercise their right tomorrow. One reason for the low voter turn-out is there’s no statewide race this year, but there are primaries galore in courthouse and statehouse races as well as two congressional districts. Secretary of State Chet Culver, Iowa’s Commissioner of Elections, just conducted a statewide “Get out the Vote” tour. He says even without contested races, it’s still a way to support candidates.Culver says it’s easy to vote — and to switch parties if you’re interested in a particular race.
