Guide shows where to get fresh veggies

June 10, 2000 By admin

Not all Iowans know which rural road to cruise down if they’re looking for fresh sweet corn being sold inexpensively off of a friendly farmer’s tailgate. A new free guide book is being released that offers one-stop shopping.Barbara Lovitt is a spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Agriculture. She says the “Farm Fresh 2000 Directory” details all of the farmer’s markets in the state, all of the strawberry producers, honey producers, fruit and vegetable growers — as well as evergreen tree growers and organics. She says the book lists everything by county.Lovitt says the directory lists some 633 different growers across Iowa. She says every dollar spent with an Iowa producer goes to support Iowa agriculture and the rural economy. You can order a free guidebook by calling 800-383-7658. The information is also available on the Internet at: www.state.ia.us/agriculture
