A Triple-A spokesman says while cell phones often distract drivers, the devices have drastically improved traffic safety. Earlier this week, the “Network of Employers for Traffic Safety” reported up to half of all accidents are caused by drivers who’re distracted from talking on their cell, changing the radio station, talking with passengers or even putting on make-up. Triple-A of Iowa spokesman Daron Van Helden says cell phones aren’t the root of all evil.Van Helden says the cell phone has been one of the greatest traffic safety devices introduced in the past 40 years. The “Network of Employers for Traffic Safety” or NETS was formed to urge Americans to pay attention to their driving. Van Helden says NETS is focusing on the nation’s largest cities, and there are no Iowa-specific events scheduled.
