Iowa lawyer says Florida tobacco settlement could be good news for Iowa

A lawyer for a firm representing Iowans in private lawsuits against the major tobacco companies says the 144-billion dollar judgement in Florida is good news. David May works for the Hawkins and Norris law firm in Des Moines. May says the Florida verdict shows the evidence is there to show the damage done by smoking.May says a number of Iowa lawsuits will soon be going to trial. He says a “class action” lawsuit may go to trial next year.Could the large award in Florida make the big tobacco companies want to settle in other states? May says anything is possible.The Florida jury returned with the verdict just a few hours after beginningdeliberations Friday.
