Stage set for baseball championship games

Championship pairings are set at the state high school baseball tournament. The 1-A title games opens today’s action in Carroll. Kee High of Lansing will go after a record 9th state championship after downing Newell-Fonda 5-3 in the semifinals. Granville Spalding beat Lynnville-Sully 19-2 to advance to the championship. The 3-A title game will match fourth ranked Denison-Schleswig against 10th ranked Fort Madison. Denison-Schleswig defeated West Delaware 15-3 to advance.In Marshalltown, the class 2-A championship matches fifth ranked Dyersville Beckman against West Branch. Beckman scored two runs in the top of the seventh to edge Osage 4-2. Blazer coach Tom Jenk says his players remained calm during a tense finish.After playing sub-500 baseball the first half of the season, Urbandale is a victory away from a state title. The ninth ranked J-Hawks got three doubles and a home run from third baseman Marc Ripperger to cruise past Burlington 11-1.The J-Hawks will play 7th ranked Marshalltown for the 4-A crown. The Bobcats got a two-hitter from Jason Allen to edge second ranked Cedar Rapids Washington 2-0.
