State inspectors will be among the thousands of people expected to enter the gates of the Iowa State Fair on opening day Thursday. The inspectors will head for the midway to scrutinize the honesty and fairness of the dozens of games of chance and skill. Dave Werning, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, says they’ll check every duck pond, dart toss and basketball shoot.Werning says inspectors will also make a series of unannounced spot checks at the fair, to make sure the games continue to be played on the level.Werning says people attending any fair and carnival across Iowa should stay alert and ask any midway worker to demonstrate how the game is played and won. By law, the price per chance can’t exceed three dollars.
