For most programs, an 8-3 record is considered a success, but when it does not lead to the one-double-a national playoffs it is considered a dissapointment at Northern Iowa. The Panthers have missed the playoffs the past three years and coach Mike Dunbar says they are hoping to get over the hump and into the playoffs. The offense is experienced led by third year starter Ryan Helming at quarterback. The defense lost eight starters but Dunbar is confident that unit will be strong, again.Dunbar says not only will the faces on defense be new, some of the schemes will be too.The Panthers are picked to finish second in the Gateway behind defending champion Illinois State. The Panthers open the season at home against Morningside on August 31st.
