Iowans who have gambling problems may be able to get relief from a new drug being tested at the University of Iowa. The lead investigator is Dr. Donald Black, a U-of-I professor of psychiatry, who says pathological gamblers need something more than just an 800-number or counseling to lick the habit.Dr. Black says participants in his study need to be able to make five trips to Iowa City over two months. While there is no monetary compensation for participants, Black says they do get free treatment for their addiction. Black is testing a medication called bupropion which is currently used to treat depression and smoking addiction. He says it -may- work for gamblers. For more information, call (319) 353-4431.
