Cyclones down UNLV for second straight year

September 11, 2000 By admin

Iowa State took an early lead and never gave it back in downing UNLV 37-22 Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. Cyclone Quarterback Sage Rosenfels threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Dan McCarney says the game was another step forward.Iowa State did have trouble running the ball at times and failed to take advantage on three occasions when UNLV turned the ball over. McCarney says those are the things they need to work on.McCarney was pleased with the play of his special teams, which scored on a blocked punt and blocked an extra point attempt. He says it was an overall solid effort.Iowa State will go into next week’s meeting with Iowa 2-0, while the Hawkeyes are 0-2. McCarney won’t speculate on what that means. He says it will be a “hornet’s nest” in Iowa City. The Cyclone players refused to talk about the upcoming Iowa game in interviews immediately following their win over UNLV. They says they don’t want to talk about the rivalry until later this week.
